Dramatic video captures moment police detective tackles man who interrupted press conference

A police detective has spear tackled a man that interrupted his press conference before allegedly making suggestive comments to a teenage girl.

Stunning vision showed quick-thinking Detective Senior Sergeant Daren Edwards abandon media outside Maroochydore Police Station to make the tackle.

In a split-second decision on Wednesday, Det Snr Sgt Edwards stopped mid-sentence as a man in a hooded red jumper appeared behind him, Nine News reported.

Without hesitating, he launched himself towards the man, who was running up behind while being chased by another man.

The pursuing man, Kevin Scells, was the father of a 19-year-old girl who he claimed had been hit on moments beforehand by the man he was chasing.

“I was just sitting in the car and this man’s said a few inappropriate things to my daughter and I’ve just reacted by chasing him up the road and it just happened to be you guys were here at the same time,” Mr Scellls told Nine News.

His daughter, Charlotte, said the man had asked if she was single and told her she was beautiful, but she told him to go away and that she wasn’t interested.

Det Snr Sgt Edwards, who sustained grazes to his head, said the man was arrested for public nuisance, the same reason he had been at the police station earlier.

He said the last time he made a spear-tackle arrest was “quite a few years ago”, and his “suit was ready for a dry-clean anyway”.
