Police are appealing for witnesses to a fatal collision on the Central Coast after a man was hit by passing car after he had only just survived a crash on Tuesday.

The male driver was hit when he stepped out of his Nissan Pulsar that crashed into a Holden Rodeo in the westbound lanes of the Central Coast Highway near Erina around 5.20am, police said.

He exited the vehicle and was struck by a white Ford Fiesta that was driving behind the vehicles with an 18-year-old P-plater behind the wheel.

Emergency services were called but the 46-year-old man died at the scene.

There were no other injuries but the female P-plater was described as being in distress.

Brisbane Waters police chief inspector George Bradbury said: "It's a horrible thing, this time of year in particular."

"It's always important after a crash, your safety is paramount, obviously move to the side of the road when safe to do so."

Officers from the Brisbane Water Local Area Command and the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit spent most of the day investigating the scene.

"Nothing is ruled out at this stage, crash investigators … they'll do their job and they'll make the determination as to what's occurred," Insp Bradbury said.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner but police have asked for witnesses to the crash to come forward with any information that may be of use.

Police are appealing for anyone who they have not yet spoken to who may have witnessed the crash or the events leading up to the crash, to contact Gosford Police on (02) 4323 5599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
