Photos show rough terrain where bodies of Russell Hill and Carol Clay could be

Victoria Police have released images of the area they are searching for missing campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay.

While a man has been charged with murder in relation to the case, police are still searching for the remains.

On Thursday night, Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Bob Hill said in mid-2020, investigators from the missing persons squad had determined Mr Hill and Ms Clay were deceased.

Gregory Stuart Lynn, 55, faced Sale Magistrates Court via video link on Friday morning charged with their murders, as police continue their search for bodies.

Court documents shed little light on what is alleged to have occurred there, but police accuse Lynn of murdering them at Wonnangatta on March 20.

Lynn did not apply for bail during the short hearing before Magistrate Greg McNamara.

A crime scene within the Great Alpine Region has been identified and Comm Hill said the investigation was "far from over".

On Friday, Victoria Police shared images taken near the preliminary search area for the bodies of Mr Hill and Ms Clay.

"We are hopeful that we will locate the remains of Mr Hill and Ms Clay... and provide closure to their families," Comm Hill said on Thursday night.

Police have not given a specific location of the crime area, given the significant community and media interest.

"We are hopeful that we can establish our infrastructure and our search parameters and we don't want the community and other parts of the media to impact on that area at this point in time," he said.

Police were not expecting any updates in relation to the case on Friday.

Mr Hill and Ms Clay were last heard from on March 20, 2020 when Mr Hill, an experienced outdoorsman, had a high-frequency radio call.

On March 19, Ms Clay was picked up from her Pakenham home by Mr Hill, she had previously told friends she was heading away and expected to return home on March 28 or 29.

Investigators were told the couple were camping together at Wonnangatta River near the Wonnangatta camping ground.
