How pet dog helped save couple from burning yacht

A pet dog has heroically saved his owners from their burning yacht as they slept off the coast of Queensland.

Charlie, the Jack Russell, spotted the blaze break out onboard the vessel southwest of Moreton Island about 5.30am on Friday morning and began barking repeatedly to alert his owners.

The pair, a 64-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman, who live on the boat, woke to the fire growing in size before quickly calling emergency services.

Water police responded to the yacht, who managed to pull the couple and Charlie from the burning boat before Queensland Fire and Emergency Services managed to extinguish the blaze.

Remarkably no one was injured.

“[Charlie’s] mum and dad have told us that if it hadn’t been for his bark warning them, they might not have woken up in time to escape their burning yacht,” Queensland Police revealed online on Saturday.

It is not yet known how the fire began, however the cause is not considered suspicious and investigations are continuing.

Acting Senior Sergeant Jay Bairstow, officer in charge of Brisbane Water Police, said with Easter coming up, boaties should be well-prepared.

“Water Police would like to give a timely reminder for all boaties to check their vessel is in a safe and operational condition, ensure they have the required safety equipment,” Acting Senior Sergeant Bairstow said.

“Communicate their travel details so people know where you are and when you are expected to return.

“Water Police wish a safe Easter on the water.”
