Woman charged with assaulting teen umpire at junior football match

A Perth woman has been charged with assaulting a 13-year-old umpire at an Australian Rules junior football match.

The 46-year-old has been summonsed to appear at Armadale Magistrates Court at a later date over the incident in Thornlie on May 4.

Police are analysing footage of the alleged assault with a view to possibly laying disorderly conduct charges against others involved.

They have also asked for any witnesses to come forward, especially anyone with video.

On Thursday the West Australian Football Commission imposed life bans on two spectators from attending junior competition matches in relation to the incident at the Tom Bateman Reserve.

The commission also suspended the team manager for the Maddington Junior Football Club for 12 months for breaching match operations policy in relation to providing support for umpires.

Both the Thornlie Junior Football Club and the Maddington club were placed on $500 good-behaviour bonds for the remainder of the season.

WAFC chief executive Gavin Taylor said such incidents at junior football matches were fortunately rare.

"The majority of clubs provide great support for umpires and an excellent game-day environment for all participants," he said in a statement.
