Perth fisherman shares gruesome photos of 'lucky' injury trying to unhook stingray
WARNING - GRAPHIC CONTENT: A Western Australia man has shared a warning after suffering a stingray barb puncture wound to his hip.
Thomas Forster, who lives in Perth, posted on Facebook “a friendly reminder” to be careful while unhooking stingrays.
“I’ve unhooked loads and loads of ray before, flipping them on their back and standing at the head to unhook but this time just came a bit unstuck,” Mr Forster wrote.
“I must have just got slightly too close and I was surprised how far the ray swung around to get me where it did.
“Anyway, stay safe out there.”
Mr Forster included pictures of the barb puncturing his hip.
He added that he was hospitalised as the barb went further into his skin, through the muscle.
“By the time I’d been in hospital for a bit, the barb had disappeared under the skin,” Mr Forster wrote.
He included a photo of the barb in a plastic container suggesting that it was later removed.
The Perth resident added that he underwent surgery on Friday.
“Pretty lucky it got me in the hip and not closer to my groin,” Mr Forster wrote.

People were shocked by his injuries and wished him a speedy recovery.
“That’s insane,” one man wrote.
Another man simply wrote, “crikey”.
“Gosh, that must have been painful,” one woman said.
