Owner of car used in CBD horror tells of moment alleged killer driver fled with his keys

The owner of the car that was used to mow down pedestrians on a busy Melbourne strip says he’s lucky to be alive after being assaulted for the keys.

Gavin Wilson said the accused driver James Gargasoulas, also known as Dimitrious, confronted him in his Melbourne home, and demanded the keys to his Holden Commodore.

“He just went off,” the 76-year-old told 7 News.

“He wanted my car and wanted the keys.”

Mr Wilson, who is the former boyfriend of Gargasoulas’s mother, said the accused attacked him, set a bible on fire and used it burn his face.

“He asked me twice for (the keys) and I said ‘no, I’m not giving it to you’,” Mr Wilson said.

Mr Wilson said he turned on the TV and was shocked to see the Bourke Street carnage.
