Olivia Colman is a leading lady with a supportive man by her side: her husband Ed Sinclair.

The Wonka actress has been married to Sinclair for over two decades after the couple met while attending school in Cambridge, England. Together, they have three children: Hall, Finn and a daughter whose name they have not revealed.

In a 2023 interview with British Vogue, Colman said the secret to her long-lasting relationship is that the two remain best friends.

“He’s my best friend. I couldn’t have done any of it without Ed going, ‘Do it, we’ll be OK,’ ” she said.

In December 2023, Sinclair stepped out in support of his wife during the premiere of Wonka where the couple were photographed laughing and embracing each other sweetly on the red carpet.

So who is Olivia Colman’s husband? Here’s everything to know about Ed Sinclair and his relationship with the Oscar-winning actress.

He is a writer and producer

Sinclair originally had aspirations to be an actor, but after struggling to break through in the industry, he returned to his passion: writing.

“He started out acting but the work just dried up,” Colman told the Daily Mail in 2013. “And, actually, for him I think it was a bit of a relief because he’d always wanted to write and he’s brilliant at it.”

She added that he was working on a novel at the time, but was keeping the process “secret” from her.

Now, Sinclair mainly works as a screenwriter and producer, even producing Colman’s 2024 project Wicked Little Letters.

He and Colman met in college

Colman and Sinclair first met in the 1990s while they were both students in Cambridge, where he was studying law and she was in a teaching training college. The Favourite actress described their meeting like a scene straight out of a movie, telling British Vogue that as soon as she saw him she knew he was the one.

“I know I’m very, very lucky,” she told the outlet in November 2023. “But also, I knew. I saw his right-hand profile and went, ‘Ah, that’s him.’ Delicious.”

Their meet-cute happened at Footlights, a famous drama club in Cambridge, where both were trying their hand at acting.

“It was love at first sight with Ed,” she told the Daily Mail. “He walked in and it was like a thunderbolt. I thought, ‘There’s the bloke I’m going to marry.’ ”

Her prediction came true as the two tied the knot in 2001, though they’ve kept details of their wedding secret.

They share three children together

Colman and Sinclair are parents to three children: two sons, Hall and Finn, and a daughter.

Finn was born in 2005 while Hall joined the family in 2007. Colman and Sinclair’s daughter came along in 2015 while Colman was filming The Night Manager, which was challenging while pregnant, she told Radio Times.

“I just can’t retain my lines like I normally would,” she said. “I’ve got a bit of nappy brain going on.”

Colman has kept her children private and said she struggles to travel so much for work while raising them.

“Ed being at home also means that he can look after the children if I’m away, and he’s a far better parent than me,” she joked to the Daily Mail. “So, although I miss the kids terribly if I’m away working, I know our little boys are in the best possible hands. When I get back they go, ‘Oh no, she’s not going to cook is she? She’s bound to burn something!’ ”

Colman added in her interview with British Vogue that she was trying to travel less and take bigger gaps between roles so she could focus on being at home with her family.

They moved to the English countryside to get away from paparazzi

Though the Colman-Sinclair family spent years living in London, the Oscar-winning actress revealed that they had moved to the countryside in Norfolk, England, during the COVID-19 pandemic in an effort to escape prying eyes.

“Yeah, we’ve moved to the countryside and it’s lovely. It’s where I’m from,” she told British Vogue of the move, before adding, “We never fell out of love with London.”

She elaborated that the paparazzi surrounding her family, however, made living in the major city “difficult.”

“Just a------- standing outside your front door, following you on the school run,” she said. “Yeah. I was scared. At one point, there were two cars chasing us and I was having a sort of meltdown, terrified. I was crying and they were laughing.”

He is supportive of Colman’s career

Colman has not only a best friend, but also her biggest cheerleader in Sinclair.

Sinclair was also by Colman’s side when she won an Academy Award for best actress for her performance in The Favourite in 2019. The following year, when she was presenting the award for best actor at the show, she reminisced on her win, sharing that it was a highlight not only for her, but for Sinclair.

“Last year was the best night of my husband’s life,” she said. “He actually says that, and I’ve given birth three times. I hope you’re all having as good a time as he did.”

They have worked together on projects

As Sinclair entered the film world, he began working as a screenwriter and producer — and even wrote one of Colman’s projects, the 2021 series Landscapers.

“He’s always there when I’m feeling like I did a bad job or something, so we’re there to pick each other up,” Colman told Yahoo of working with her husband.

She added that the key to working together, however, was to leave the work on set and settle back into their roles as husband and wife when at home.

“We worked out very early on that it’s much better if he’s a writer, I’m an actor and we don’t talk about it,” she said. “It’s much easier not to talk about the work.”

The couple worked together again on Wicked Little Letters, which was produced by Sinclair and starred Colman.
