Two children have died after a car crashed into a school in Sydney's west

Two children have died and several have been injured after a car crashed into a school in Greenacre.

The female driver of a Toyota Kluger hit the weatherboard building at Banksia Road Primary School in Greenacre about 9.45am on Tuesday.

"Two boys, aged eight, were critically injured," NSW Police said in a statement.

"They were taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital where they were pronounced deceased.

Paramedics arrived to "a scene of carnage" with "distressed and overwhelmed children and teachers".

It was "pandemonium" and "distressing," NSW Ambulance superintendent Stephanie Radnidge told reporters.

"They were crying, they were distressed, some were asking for their parents."

The 52-year-old driver was uninjured and taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

"Obviously, this is a very, very tragic event," NSW Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith told reporters.

“A late model silver Kluger entered the rear yard of the school and then collided with a hardwood building at the end of the car park.

“The vehicle continued inside the car park.

“As a result of that collision, five kids were urgently conveyed to Westmead Hospital, tragically two of those children are deceased."

There were 17 children and one adult female teacher assessed on scene, with 24 children in the classroom at the time.

"We're not looking this as an intentional act. It is a crash investigation," Mr Smith added.

Police from Bankstown Local Area Command and Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit on are on scene, conducting inquiries.

Police have asked parents wanting to collect their children to use the Boronia Road school entrance.

A crime scene has been established.
