Sydney man killed in gangland execution-style shooting

A man has been killed in a unit block in Sydney's inner west in an execution-style shooting believed to be related to the recent spate of underworld killings across Sydney.

The victim, named by Fairfax Media as Kemel Barakat and believed to be 29 years old, was reportedly shot in the stomach and chest in the early hours of Friday at his waterfront unit on Bennett St in Mortlake.

Police say the shooting was targeted and no arrests have been made.

It's believed the victim was involved in outlaw bikie gangs and was linked to the shooting death of Hamad Assaad, who was gunned down in his Georges Hall driveway last October.

Assaad, 29, was a key suspect in the murder of Gangland kingpin and convicted killer Walid Ahmad, 40, who was killed in a spray of bullets on the rooftop car park of Bankstown Central shopping centre in April.

Ten underworld figures have been killed in Sydney since 2015, with the spate of bloody murders prompting NSW Police to launch Strike Force Osprey in November to oversee the investigations into each of the incidents.

Homicide detectives from State Crime Command are at the scene as family and friends of the victim arrive at the apartment complex.

An older man, who appeared distressed, arrived at the apartment complex early on Friday morning and was heard asking: "Where is my son?" media outlets have reported.

A man in his mid 50s had to be treated at the scene by paramedics, a NSW Ambulance spokesman told AAP.
