Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer owes small business $26,000

FIRST ON 7: A small business owner who scored a win against Salim Mehajer says he hopes the Auburn deputy mayor pays his debts.

Nick Harris and his wife are waiting for Mr Mehajer to pay them the $26,000 he owes their business SignLight for a sign they built, which is now towering over Lidcombe.

Mr Harris took the deputy mayor to court last Friday and won.

"The hurt that he created, the way that he acted, he was all so nice beforehand and suddenly the signs went up, totally cold, no return of phone calls,” Mr Harris told 7 News.

"I've been to his house, I've seen his cars, the Rolls Royces, the Lamborghinis... I had no idea he would do this to me."

"People do work for you, pay them."

Mr Mehajer has been involved in a number of other legal cases in recent months and has come under further scrutiny in recent days after it was revealed an Auburn Council car park was sold to a company run by his sister for a reported $8.5m.

This is nearly half what the car park is worth, according to an independent valuer who estimated it could fetch up to $15 million.

Local Government minister Paul Toole has urged Mr Mehajer to step down from his position.

"I would urge the councillor in question to consider his position and stand down until these serious matters are dealt with,” he said in a statement to 7 News.

Auburn city councillor Irene Simms said developers and real estate agents shouldn’t be allowed on councils.

"It's time that Baird and the Liberal Government decided these people, developers and real estate agents shouldn't be on council."
