Two critical after temple nail gun attack

Two men are in critical conditions in hospital after being shot in the head with a nail gun at a Sydney temple.

It's unclear what sparked the incident as there were no direct witnesses to the attack, but plenty of people saw the horrific aftermath.

Police believe one man shot the other, and then turned the nail gun on themselves.

It's not yet known which man was the shooter.

"Police... found one man with a nail protruding from his head, he was being treated by local residents at the centre," Superintendent James Johnson said.

Twenty-nine-year-old monk, Karuna Kim, was shot in the forehead, and 59-year-old caretaker, Tha Lam, was shot behind his ear.

The shooting took place in one of the rooms at the Vat Ketanak Khmer Kampuchea Krom temple, at Rossmore in Sydney's south-west.

"I see the guy sit down on the chair, the president sit on the chair and I see the mark... and blood," a witness told 7News.

"Over last night no one sleep, all the monk no sleep."

Both men have undergone surgery and remain in critical conditions.

A police search at the temple's grounds uncovered the nail gun, which is to be forensically examined.

Detectives are still trying to figure out exactly what happened, but do not believe a third person was involved.
