Girl, 12, 'abducted and sexually touched' confirmed as false report

A 12-year-old girl in regional NSW has been offered support after she falsely claimed she had been abducted from her backyard and indecently assaulted.

Detectives were told the child was in the backyard of her Taree home on Wednesday morning when a man grabbed her from behind, took her to nearby bushland and sexually touched her.

The girl said the man was wearing a hooded jumper at the time.

NSW police say a Taree girl falsely reported a man had abducted and sexually touched her.

An investigation was launched including a public appeal for information.

But after speaking to several people and conducting forensic examinations, NSW Police on Thursday afternoon declared the report was false and the incident had never happened.

"The girl has been spoken to by police and offered support services," a police spokesperson said in a statement.
