Mystery after toddler found wandering alone as mum disappears
Mystery surrounds a missing mother whose son was found wandering alone outside an apartment complex two weeks ago.
On July 25, 21-year-old mother Leila Cavett was last seen at a Walmart carpark in the US state of Florida with a man, according to CNN.
Two days later, her two-year-old son Kamdyn was found walking around barefoot at a nearby apartment complex.
A witness who found Kamdyn told police she went out for coffee when she spotted him.
Police appealed for information about the boy, with Ms Cavett’s family spotting his picture on social media and coming forward.
On July 28, Ms Cavett’s Silverado 3500 pickup truck was spotted by police in Hollywood.
Two weeks on, Ms Cavett remains missing and the Miramar Police Department have handed the case over to Hollywood PD.
“Due to recent developments in the investigation of Leila Cavett’s disappearance, the Hollywood Police Department will be the lead agency continuing the search for her,” Miramar Police said on Facebook.
While Ms Cavett’s family is from Alabama, the young mother lives in Atlanta and her family is confused as to why she would go to Florida.
Her father, Curtis Cavett, believes she might have travelled to Florida to meet with a man she met through an online dating service, after he examined her social media accounts.
One of Ms Cavett’s sisters said they last spoke on July 17 and she seemed fine on FaceTime and didn’t mention plans to go to Florida.
Three of Ms Cavett’s sisters drove from Alabama to Florida to reunite with their nephew at the end of July, according to the Associated Press, however according to CNN, Kamdyn remains in the custody of Florida’s foster care system.
When Miramar PD first appealed for information when Kamdyn was found in Florida, the department was reportedly inundated with offers to help out the toddler.
“Many of have offered to donate diapers and other items to the little boy found Sunday morning,” the department said in a July 31 Facebook post.
“Although he is in foster care and his needs are being met, ChildNet – the organisation that administers the foster care system in Broward County – will happily accept donations of diapers and baby wipes for children like him.”
