Mum wins $50,000 on scratchie she was given four years ago

A woman who forgot about a scratchie in her bedside table for four years was shocked when she finally revealed her $50,000 prize.

The woman, from North Lakes north of Brisbane, had forgotten about the $4 Tombs of Riches Instant Scratch-Its she was given as a farewell gift in 2015.

“The Instant Scratch-Its tickets were given to me as a gift from my work! They were a farewell gift,” the woman, who remained anonymous, told a Golden Casket official.

“I received them back in 2015 … it was a beautiful gift, but I was just too emotional to scratch them, so I kept putting it off.”

The woman had the scratchies in her bag for a year before she put them in a drawer.

She had completely forgotten about them until she was recently searching for something in the bedside table.

“I found them and said to my daughter, ‘let’s sit and scratch them all now! I need to stop putting it off’,” she said.

“So we had a lovely time scratching them because so many of them were winners. We had gotten up to about $60 and just looked at each other and said, ‘yes, winning! What a good day’.

“Little did we know, that was just the beginning.”

When the woman’s daughter told her they had won the sizeable prize, her mother didn’t believe her.

The mother then did not want to get her hopes up and thought the prize would have expired.

“Then I got a bit disappointed because I knew it was because of my own carelessness that I had forgotten about them, and potentially missed out on $50,000,” she said.

“Now I feel fantastic and relieved. It’s so exciting.”

The ticket was purchased from IGA Xpress Caboolture and co-owner Amy Zhu told a Golden Casket official she was thrilled by the win.
