Mum says baby was pricked by compass needle hidden in Big W trolley

A Perth mum claims her baby was pricked by a compass needle in a trolley at Big W.

Mikayla Harris told 7News she was shopping with her six-month-old Kai at Livingstone Markets, Canning Vale, in the city’s south when he became “very unsettled”.

Ms Harris had placed Kai in her trolley’s baby seat. She picked the little boy up to check what was wrong and found his leg was bleeding.

“When I first saw it I just freaked out,” she told the publication.

The mum said she then found a sharp compass, which is a technical drawing instrument, lodged in the seat.

“It’s just an act of evil,” Ms Harris said.

Kai will now need ongoing blood tests while his mum waits anxiously for results.

A Big W spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia the safety of its customers is “an absolute priority”.

“As soon as we were made aware of the incident in our BIG W Livingston store, our team did everything they could to support our customer and her baby,” the spokesperson said.

“Our trolleys are cleaned and checked regularly by our store team members throughout the day and we are investigating the incident to determine how this could have occurred.

“We are pleased to confirm that we have been in regular contact with the customer and her baby is recovering well.”
