Moore loses money on small films

Julianne Moore says she loses money doing independent films like Still Alice.

The 54-year-old who won the best actress Oscar for her role in the small-budget film, says she acts in independent films for the love of it.

"You tend to lose money on those little movies," she told Kyle and Jackie O on Kiis FM.

"They are made for very, very little... you don't even expect to be able to cover your expenses with a movie like that."

"You just do it because you love it."

Moore, who also won an Independent Spirit award for the role, has been an advocate of independent film.

But the Hunger Games: Mockingjay actress says she supplements this work with other films.

"It evens out," she said.

"We have other opportunities where we're able to make a living."

After her Oscar win, Moore said she hoped there was a future for more emotionally complex films in a market driven by special effects-driven blockbusters.

" I think there's an audience for movies like this," she told reporters backstage.

" I go to the movies because... I like to see complicated, interesting stories about people and relationships."

" (But) At the end of the day, Hollywood is also a business so I think it depends on how many people buy tickets."

Moore will this year appear in Hunger Games:Mockingjay - Part 2 and Maggie's Plan.
