Melbourne man makes exciting fuel price find: 'Like winning the lottery'

With petrol and diesel prices at an all-time high, Aussie motorists are taking to social media to share their cheapest fuel finds across the country.

The latest fuel bargain was found in the Melbourne suburb of Fairfield, where a woman claimed her husband scored diesel for just $1.36 per litre at a Shell Coles Express.

Currently, the price of diesel at the Fairfield service station is $2.19 per litre, while E10 is $1.05 and Premium 98 petrol is $2.31.

“My hubby sent me this. He went to fill up in Fairfield this morning and he was at the lights and noticed [the] Shell sign saying $1.48, so he thought, ‘Oh what’s happening, is this right?’” wrote the woman on popular Facebook page Markdown Addicts Australia.

However, when the confused man drove up to the fuel pump, he noticed that the screen was showing $1.36 for diesel, so he thought “even better” and decided to fill up his vehicle.

After the man filled up his tank and payed for the discounted fuel, a Coles Express employee explained that the cheap fuel was a result of a computer malfunction, as the actual price was more than $2 per litre.

“So even the computer thinks diesel is too high,” wrote the baffled woman.

When the man eventually drove out of the Coles Express service station, he noted that the sign went back up to 229.9 cents per litre (CPL) – meaning he scored a saving of almost 94 cents per litre.

“Winner, winner, chicken dinner. Woohoo!” wrote one excited Facebook user.

“Well done, didn't miss an opportunity,” wrote a second user.

“That’s almost like winning the lottery!” laughed a third.

While several people suggested the woman’s husband was “so lucky” for his find and should try his luck buying a lottery ticket.

“Lucky man. Someone is definitely looking after him today. Maybe go buy a lotto ticket next,” joked one user.

Others shared similar stories of finding hidden discount petrol and diesel finds across the country, including Coles Express Bendigo, which was selling E10 for 130.9 CPL, and Coles Express Preston, which was selling diesel for 122.9 CPL.

Fuel price cycles, according to the ACCC

Petrol and diesel prices move up and down in regular patterns or cycles, reads the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) website.

“The cheapest and most expensive days to buy petrol can change from cycle to cycle. Use price cycles to help you decide when to buy petrol,” reads the website.

According to the ACCC website, petrol prices in Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide are at their “highest point of the cycle” and if possible, “motorists should avoid buying petrol at this time.”

Meanwhile in Melbourne, petrol prices are increasing, so drivers are urged to “shop around” and “find retailers that have not yet increased prices.”

The only capital city where petrol prices appear to be decreasing is Perth, but they are “likely to decrease further” so motorists should “delay buying petrol until later.”

In the meantime, motorists can shop around for the most competitive petrol prices using apps, such as Petrol Spy Australia, GasBuddy and the NRMA app (for NSW drivers).
