Melb taxi passenger is critical: hospital

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after leaping from a moving taxi in Melbourne to avoid paying a $10 fare.

He fell heavily on to the road after leaping out of the moving cab at Northcote early on Monday morning

The taxi driver turned himself into police hours after the incident.

He has been arrested and is facing charges.

Police also tracked down the cab and took it for testing.

It is believed the injured 22-year-old and another man got into the taxi with the intention of running off without paying.

It is understood the fare would have only been about $10.

Royal Melbourne Hospital Head of Emergency Professor George Braitberg said the man's injuries were significant.

"He’s in a critical condition. He’s been to the operating room. He’s now in intensive care, but he has very significant injuries," he said.
