'He got on one knee': Meghan Markle reveals how Prince Harry proposed in first TV interview together

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have delivered their first public TV interview, revealing exactly how they met and how the young royal popped the question.

The newly-engaged couple revealed they met on a blind date arranged by a mutual friend.

“It was through her and we met once or twice back to back on two dates in London last July,” Harry told BBC.

"It was I think about three maybe four weeks later that I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana and we camped out with each other under the stars."

The newly engaged pair are set to marry in a church wedding in the British spring, early next year.

Harry admitted he had never seen Markle’s hit US TV show Suits, while the actress conceded she knew little of the royal family.

"I had never watched Suits, I had never heard of Meghan before and I was beautifully surprised when I walked into that room and saw her. I was like, 'I'm going to have to really up my game here'," Harry added.

Markle said there was a misconception that because she was an actress she would be used to being in the media spotlight.

"I did not have any understanding of just what it would be like," she said.

As for the popping the question, Markle said it was an instant "yes" and could barely let Harry finish asking the question.

Harry said the proposal came a few weeks ago while they were at his home, Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.

"It happened a few weeks ago, earlier this month, here at our cottage; just a standard typical night for us," the prince said on Monday evening.

Markle added: "Just a cosy night, it was - what we were doing just roasting chicken."

Harry said he was "roasting a chicken, trying to roast a chicken".

Markle added when the question came "it was just an amazing surprise".

"It was so sweet and natural and very romantic, he got on one knee," the future princess said.

"As a matter of fact I could barely let you finish proposing, I said 'can I say yes now?'"

Markle also revealed the prince designed the ring himself.

“The ring is yellow gold because that’s her favourite, and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana and the little diamonds either side are from my mother’s jewellery collection to make sure that she’s with us on this - on this crazy journey together,” Harry said.
