Manhunt for detainee in CBD
UPDATE: A manhunt has ended for a person who escaped custody in the CBD this afternoon.
The man escaped from a building near the corner of Pier and Wellington streets just after 3.45pm.
He was recaptured at the corner of William and Newcastle streets in Northbridge at 5.50pm.
Four escape Northam detention centre
It is understood the escapee is a detainee who is believed to have been in the custody of Serco guards.
Police have confirmed the man was not a prisoner being held by the Department of Corrective Services.
DIAC is trying to determine the circumstances of the escape.
Police said the man was last seen heading west on Murray Street, sparking a heavy police presence in the CBD - particularly in the Perth Cultural Centre.
Officers also searched stores including Myer.
Police cordoned off every corner that intersects Murray Street and helicopters monitored the situation from the air.
Witnesses told The West Australian that police reviewed security footage at Myer.

January 12 - Three men take just 45 seconds to break out from Yongah Hill. Two of the Vietnamese detainees were caught, with a third still on the run.
January 3 - Rapist Cameron John Graham and fellow inmate Kelden Edward Fraser kick their way out of a prison van at Geraldton Airport, as they are transferred back to Perth. They were found at a bush camp near Mullewa, about 450km north of Perth, 72 hours later.
December 27 - A Vietnamese detainee escapes on his own from Yongah Hill.
