Mangrove claim cricket crown

Ian Rowe bats for Mangrove Cricket Club during their grand final win against Roebuck Bay Cricket Club.

Mangrove Cricket Club have emerged as the Broome Twenty20 champions for 2013, after a pulsating grand final victory over Roebuck Bay Cricket Club last Sunday at St Mary’s.

Mangrove won the toss and posted a competitive 133. David Marion starred with the bat and made a superb 56. Marion received strong support from Wade Kingsley (27) and Craig

Coulson (20 not out).

For Roebuck, Lynton Phillipson was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets for 21 runs.

Roebuck, aiming for their fourth successive Twenty20 title, provided a spirited run chase. Captain Justin Thompson led from the front with an aggressive 30 and Steve Thompson smashed 26.

They were well on target at the 10 over mark, however, an outstanding four-over spell of 1-9 by Joel Handford and two wickets in an over from Brad Lovell set Roebuck on their heels at a crucial stage.

Late hitting by Craig Wilson (26 not out) gave Roebuck a hint of victory but they eventually fell 12 runs short.

David Marion was awarded player of the match and completed a fine Twenty 20 series where he scored 184 runs at 36.8 and took nine wickets at 8.2.

Cricket is now in recess for the Broome Cup weekend before the over-35 competition swings into action.
