A desperate search is underway for a man who went missing off Fraser Island (K’gari) in southeast QLD after his boat took on water overnight.

Two people are believed to have been on-board the vessel when they radioed emergency services about 8.30pm on Sunday.

Police and marine services launched an air and water search off Sandy Cape in the island’s northern tip on Sunday evening.

On Monday morning rescuers were able to find a woman in the water.

She was retrieved by a rescue helicopter at 11.30am.

She was taken to to Bundaberg Hospital for treatment.

Police are still scrambling to find the man.

The search is also being aided by Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) Hervey Bay.
