Man falls off balcony trying to escape hotel quarantine

A man in hotel quarantine in Far North Queensland has suffered injuries after allegedly trying to escape.

Queensland Police told Yahoo News Australia, the man, 29, from Victoria was injured after falling from the building in Cairns on Friday at about 11am.

Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young told reporters on Friday, the man fell off a balcony before being taken to Cairns Base Hospital.

“Apparently a gentleman did try to climb out of the balcony that they were on and then fell,” she said.

“He was taken to the Cairns Base Hospital and I understand he does have some injuries.”

He suffered minor leg injuries. He’s yet to cop an infringement notice.

Victorian couple fined $8000

Two Victorians were also fined $4003 each for allegedly lying on border declaration forms.

The couple, aged in their 40s, left their Melbourne home during a lockdown and travelled through regional NSW to Queensland.

They sparked public health alerts in both states after they tested positive following their June 5 arrival.

Police had to wait to interview the pair, who were only released from a Sunshine Coast hospital on Friday.

Queensland also declared Waverley Council, a local government area in Sydney, a Covid hotspot.

From 1am on Saturday, returning Queenslanders and anyone who's been in the Waverley Council area in Sydney's east in the past fortnight will have to spend two weeks in hotel quarantine.

Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young warned the Waverley hotspot could be widened further if Sydney's cluster continues to grow.
