Man faces fine for parking ute in his own driveway

A Perth man has been warned he is facing fines for parking in his own driveway, following a dispute over a 60cm overhang that’s pitted neighbours against each other.

Brad Hill always makes sure his ute is backed up as far as it can go in his driveway, but the front sticks out over the footpath.

It’s barely enough to trouble most pedestrians, but one neighbour dobbed him in to the local council.

“Bit of a busybody yes, someone with a bit of time on their hands,” Mr Hill said of the complainant.

He told 7 News a ranger visited his Piara Waters property on Sunday and gave him a verbal warning.

“She said if it keeps happening then, yeah, fines can be given,” Mr Hill said.

The resident’s driveway measures 4.8m from the garage door to the letterbox – just enough space to fit his wife’s car.

Even without the tow bar on his own car, the vehicle measures 5.3m – too long to fit the space.

Under local parking laws, paths must be kept clear, but Brad says he has no other option as he keeps his lawn mowing equipment in his garage, and no-stopping lines run for 150m either side of his house.

His verge is off limits, and parking on the nature strip across the road is also banned.

“We can’t even park one car on the verge and do a diagonal because obviously we’ve been told we can’t park on the verge,” he said.

The resident’s suggestion to build a parking bay into the nature strip was also rejected by the City of Armadale, so he is left with no other option but to continue breaking the law.
