Man dies after being hit by Sydney train

A man has died after being struck by a train in Sydney's west.

Emergency services were called to Railway Terrace in Merrylands shortly before 2am on Sunday and found the man with critical head injuries. He died at the scene.

Train services have been stopped between Merrylands and Guildford for investigations.

Police are also investigating reports two other people may have been in the rail corridor at the time the man was struck.

A farmer arrested for shooting dead a suspected burglar in a remote farmhouse has been named locally as Robert Lomas. He was today (Fri) still being quizzed by detectives over the shooting of Marcus Smith, 19, during the second break-in at his property in less than 10 hours. Smith's mum Kerry, 51, uploaded a photo of her with her son on social media which prompted an outpouring of sympathy from well-wishers. One wrote: "I’m truly heartbroken. Sending love to you all."
