Man charged after nine-year-old girl ingests illicit drug in food

A man has been charged after a child allegedly ingested food containing an illicit drug.

The girl, 9, was unresponsive when taken to John Hunter Hospital in the NSW Hunter Region on Monday, police said.

She was found with bruising after police said doctors were told she consumed food containing an illicit drug and may have been given non-prescribed medication.

Police said forensic and pathology tests are currently being undertaken while she remains in hospital.

A 28-year-old man was arrested at a home at Raymond Terrace on Monday about 9pm.

He’s been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

It will be alleged in court the man, who is known to the girl, assaulted her, causing bruising.

He’s been refused bail and will face court on Tuesday as investigations continue.
