Friends say man accused of murdering sick partner was 'a great support'

A man accused of killing his sick partner has been described by friends as being a “great support” as her health declined.

On Wednesday, 62-year-old Alan Greentree was charged with the murder of Dawn Butterworth and refused bail.

A home care nurse discovered Ms Butterworth’s body at the unit she shared with Greentree on Monday morning.

Friends and neighbours have expressed shock at the Penshurst woman’s violent death.

Neighbours say the 67-year-old victim, whom friend Allyson O’Malley described as a “gorgeous woman” with a “love of life,” had been struggling with emphysema.

“He seemed like a really beautiful, supportive person,” Ms O’Malley said.

Ms O’Malley, who had known Ms Butterworth for a decade, said she loved going to the Penshurst RSL to play bingo, referring to the club as her second home.

“She loved her bingo, she used to come in Thursday and Friday before she got unwell,” Ms O’Malley said.

Greentree was due to face a magistrate on Tuesday but instead opted to remain in his cell.

He will face court again in October.
