Man, 20, dies three days after suspected festival overdose

A Victorian man has died just days after suffering a suspected drug overdose at a music festival.

The 20-year-old, from Mansfield, died in hospital on Tuesday after being transported from the Beyond The Valley event in Lardner, east of Melbourne, in a critical condition on Saturday.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner, a statement said on Tuesday.

“The circumstances surrounding his death are yet to be determined, however it is not being treated as suspicious,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

The man’s death comes just days after a 22-year-old Queensland man died and two people were hospitalised after taking an unknown substance at the Lost Paradise music festival on the NSW Central Coast.

Police warning for festival-goers

Revellers ringing in the new year at Sydney’s Field Day have been warned by police they are taking their life into their own hands if they take drugs, no matter the colour of the pill.

Alcohol and illegal substances cannot be taken into the Fuzzy event held in The Domain from midday on Tuesday.

“We all should be concerned about electronic music festivals,” NSW Police Acting Deputy Commissioner Mark Walton told reporters in Sydney.

“There is a clear association with illicit drug use at those festivals and the worst outcomes are being seen at times.”

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian stood firm on her stance on drug taking and pill testing.

We don’t believe it is okay to normalise drug-taking” she told reporters on Tuesday.

“Do not take illegal substances. It can have lethal consequences for you, your family and the people around you.”
