Landlord fumes after tenants 'make house their own'

A landlord has hit out at his tenants after they decided to make his rental property “their own” with “hideous” renovations.

Late last month, Jeff Kowalczuk, who appears to live in the US, went to inspect his investment after the tenants’ lease expired and they moved out — but was stunned by what he found.

In footage that has been viewed more than 10 million times on TikTok, the landlord shows photos of what the home looked like on move in day and the terrifying aftermath.

“When tenants make your house their own,” he captioned the clip, which shows the home’s formerly clean grey walls painted bright red and yellow, and rubbish strewn throughout.

In the living room, the tenants appear to have painted the white fireplace dark grey and black and a stick can be seen sitting on top. In the kitchen, the pantry door appears to have undergone a similar makeover and dirty dishes and leftover food litter the benches and sink.

Numerous pipes stick out of the bathroom walls, which have also been wallpapered on the bottom. One of the bedrooms has also been painted bright orange with patchy “brick” wallpaper. A second video shows a number of items including furniture and boxes still in the house and paper hanging from the ceiling.

Repairs cost landlord $15k

Mr Kowalczuk called the tenants’ renovations “weird AF” and revealed it cost him A$15,636 to remove the rubbish and fix up the property so it can be leased again. He also said he did an inspection after six months but “it did not look like this”.

“Like a bunch of Vikings pillaged it. Lots of tree limbs and other weird items throughout lol,” Mr Kowalczuk said. Almost 40,000 shocked viewers have commented on the footage, saying the renters “ruined” the home.

“What in the medieval steampunk is going on?” one woman said, to which Mr Kowalczuk responded: “Assume they went to the renaissance festival on mushrooms and came home and did their best.”

“They were totally doing escape rooms,” another person said. “They have terrible taste,” someone else wrote.
