When Sonia Kruger announced she was expecting her first child at the weekend, talk inevitably turned to her age.

At 48, the TV personality has become just one of a small group of celebrity women over the age of 45 who have fallen pregnant in recent years.

In Australia, designer Collette Dinnigan gave birth at 46 and Deborah Thomas at 45, while international identities like Halle Berry and Gwen Stefani have also both become mothers in their mid-40s.

But for Kruger, the announcement she and TV executive partner Craig McPherson were having a baby, made via social media at the weekend, was a long time coming.

The media maven, who turns 49 next week, has opened up about her struggles to conceive in the past and revealed her heartbreak at suffering a series of miscarriages.

"We did conceive naturally several times and I miscarried on a number of occasions," Kruger said in 2012.

"We tried IVF and it wasn't successful. The doctors were very clear with me, too, that for women over the age of 45, which was the age we attempted IVF, the success rate is zero.

"You still believe it can happen, you see stories and you think 'maybe that can happen for us', but the odds are very slim."

Now past the 16-week mark, Kruger is understood to have celebrated the news with family and friends on the Gold Coast at the weekend.

And her celebrity pals have already taken to social media to express their joy at her news too, with Kylie Gillies and Lisa Wilkinson sending messages of congratulations.

Kruger's former Dancing with the Stars co-host Daniel MacPherson even joked he was expecting to be called "Uncle D Mac".

Seven newsreader Chris Bath sent well wishes from both her and husband Jim Wilson.
