Kokoda Girls raise more than $20k
Goldfields trekker Kathryn Paynter is a finalist for a prestigious State award after her group Kalgoorlie Kokoda Girls raised more than $20,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Mrs Paynter flies out for Papua New Guinea on Saturday to tackle the gruelling Kokoda track along with fellow Goldfields women Karen Crook, Heather Lavery and Allison Puckett.
The group have been training for months to prepare for the arduous 96km, nine-day trek through the jungle where outnumbered Australian diggers fought a famous and bloody campaign against the Japanese in World War II.
Mrs Payner is due to return on August 16 – just two days before the winners of the Chevron-RFDS Spirit of the West Awards are announced at a gala ball in Perth.
She is among seven finalists for the prestigious awards, which recognises the group’s efforts over many months to raise the profile of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder RFDS base.
