Key milestone suggests Omicron peak has long passed for NSW and Victoria

NSW and Victoria's Omicron waves continue to trend down however daily deaths remain high.

On Saturday NSW reported a further 18 Covid fatalities and Victoria added 41 deaths to its pandemic toll.

The combined 59 deaths are down from the 67 the two states reported on Friday.

Omicron wave well beyond peak

NSW's daily Covid cases dropped below 10,000 cases for the first time since December 28 with a further 8,389.

Hospitalisations and ICU admissions both fell and now stand at 2,337 and 152 respectively.

Victoria's latest cases also fell below 10,000 cases - the first time this has occurred since January 3, offering further evidence the peak of the Omicron wave has long gone.

The state reported 7,810 new cases, with just 2,711 from PCR tests.

There are 687 people in hospital with Covid while 80 are in ICU and 31 ventilated.

With hospitalisations dropping, NSW will return elective surgery ahead of schedule.

However Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant has warned there are still significant numbers requiring ventilation and the health system still remains under pressure.

"As immunity wanes, we may well see an uptick in cases - we may well need to revaccinate some people that are at risk of severe outcomes," she warned.
