Petrol stations under microscope ahead of long weekend

Hundreds of petrol stations are being inspected by Fair Trading as the long weekend looms.

Authorities are urging motorists to dob the bad guys in.

Some service stations are advertising their cheapest petrol on the billboard outside.

But at the bowser it is not on offer, forcing motorists to use the more expensive petrol.

There are also allegations of collusion.

The ACCC has instituted proceedings in the Federal Court against BP Australia, Caltex Australia, Eureka Operations, Woolworths and 7-Eleven.

Motorists are bracing themselves for the long weekend.

There is already a price rise in South Australia, it is likely that the other states will go about now.

To avoid the holiday price hike, fill up on the way home. Price differences can be staggering.

Where to fill up:

  • Returning from the South Coast of NSW, don't fill up in Nowra at 153.9 cents per litre when you could fill at Wollongong for 144.3 cents per litre.

  • Coming home to Brisbane from Hervey Bay, don't fill up at Gympie at 148.4 cents per litre. Fill up in the Sunshine Coast for 136.4 cents per litre.

  • If you’re heading back to Melbourne from Wilson's Promontory, don't stop for petrol at Leongatha at 151.4 cents per litre, when down the road at Koo Wee Rup you can fill up for 146.9 cents per litre.
