Named and shamed: Inside Sydney's filthiest restaurants and takeaways

Sydney's filthiest restaurants and takeaways have been named and shamed by the NSW Food Authority, including some of the city's most expensive.

The authority says 288 fines are issued to the city's eateries weekly, with Criniti's on the wharf at Woollomooloo, Event Cinemas at Burwood and Red Rooster at Seven Hills among the offenders.

Ben Lees from the NSW Food Authority said customers had a right to know their meal was going to be safe.

“It's extremely important that customers can go on Name and Shame to see the businesses that got it wrong,” he said.

The suburbs with the most fines include Chatswood, Merrylands and Mascot.

Paul Vogt of Bayside Council, in Sydney's south, said there needed to be a hard stance taken.

"The safety of the public is foremost in our mind and we don't compromise on that, and we'll take whatever enforcement action that is required,” he said.

“If that means having to close a premises down then we will not hesitate doing that.”
