'Insane' moment couch ‘blown off’ 19th floor of Sydney apartment

Residents in Sydney are counting their blessings after a couch was reportedly ‘blown off’ the balcony of a 19th floor apartment before smashing into a neighbouring property’s glass windows and hitting the ground.

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in Wentworth Point, in the city’s west, when wind gusts reached up to 83 kilometres an hour.

In a post on Reddit, images reveal the damage left to the neighbouring apartment on Half Street, with windows clearly smashed, and the couch lying in a crumpled heap on the pavement below.

“The couch came from the building across the street, somewhere above the 19th floor,” one local told Yahoo News Australia. “The couch was on the balcony before it was blown off. It appears to have struck the window, breaking it, before falling to the ground and luckily not hitting anyone."

A resident who lives in the same building as the one the couch came from, and who reported the incident to authorities, said he was alarmed when objects started falling from the sky.

“Glass came down and then the sofa,” he wrote online. “Everyone flocked to their windows to see what was going on. It smashed into the building opposite us, like 50 metres away, and blew up the glass window which exploded on a cat that was sleeping there and then left a nice scratch on the window below before hitting the ground.

“Luckily no one was walking under at the time because there was a lot of glass falling down and if someone was under the lounge they would have 100 per cent died.”

Another local responded to the Reddit post saying “two cats were sleeping near the window and one was hurt with some cuts from the glass.”

‘The stuff of nightmares’

The post on social media has since gone viral, with hundreds alarmed over what happened.

“I can’t even imagine the insane fear I would have with a window smashed open like that with my cats nearby,” one person wrote. “It’s the stuff of my nightmares.”

“Imagine being up high in your apartment, chilling in the lounge, and a flying couch smashes your window," someone said.

“Freaky windy,” someone else added. “My apartment windows are shaking,” another Sydney resident said. “[It’s] crazy.”
