Infant found alive in apartment with bodies of five adults: 'Dropped dead'

A baby has been found alive in an apartment with five dead adults after authorities say they believe a drug party went terribly wrong.

Three women and two men were found dead in The North Range Crossings Apartments in the US state of Colorado on Sunday at about 3.45pm, The Denver Post reports.

A four-month-old baby girl and a woman were found alive, according to The Denver Channel.

Police said the victims ranged in age from 24 to 32. The publication also reported the baby's parents, Sam Marquez and Karina Rodriguez, were among the dead and the party was being held inside their apartment.

Sam Marquez's father, Dan, told the Denver Channel his step-daughter found the group lying lifeless on the floor.

"Salina went over there – the door was open – she walked in and they’re all laying on the floor, man," he said.

"Sam, he’s a good guy. He’s 24. He loved his job; always talking about his job, talking about his new daughter. He loved his daughter. He said, ‘That’s the new love of my life.’"

Mr Marquez said he believes an angel was watching over his granddaughter. The surviving adult inside the unit was identified as 29-year-old Cora, Mr Marquez's daughter.

"All my kids are good kids,” he said. “I really feel like it’s a dream or whatever, you know. It’s not reality."

Judicial District Attorney Brian Mason said an “overwhelming amount” of cocaine and fentanyl was found after drug tests were conducted. He believes the group thought they were taking cocaine but it was in fact laced with heavy amounts of fentanyl, causing them to overdose.

Investigators wore hazmat suits while searching the apartment.

Mr Mason described it as a “nightmare” scene.

“They essentially dropped dead where they were. They didn’t have time to call for help,” he told Colorado Public Radio.

Autopsies and drug testing of each victim still need to be done to confirm how they died, Mr Mason said.

He is concerned that there are other people who might have drugs from the same supply as the one used by the victims, potentially putting their lives at risk too.

Detectives are working to determine where the drugs were obtained and “will vigorously pursue charges for those who sold/provided the drugs", police said in a statement Monday.
