Haunting last words of woman, 25, who died after suffering 'severe headache'

A disorientated young woman suffering from a “sudden, severe headache” told doctors she had “made a mistake” before dying in hospital at the age of 25, an inquest has heard.

Gaia Young, from the UK, fell ill in July last year after spending the day cycling and hanging out with friends.

Her mum Dorit Uhlemann told the inquest hearing on Monday her daughter began suffering from a headache and “awful vomiting” at her home before being rushed to hospital, The Sun reports.

Medics were initially concerned Ms Young was intoxicated “because of her age and... being with friends [throughout the day]”.

“When I asked if she had been drinking she said ‘not enough’,” Dr Zoe Veary, who saw her in the emergency room, told the court.

“She often made the comment ‘I made a mistake’.”

Ms Young appeared “dehydrated and agitated” and was seen holding her stomach.

However Ms Uhlemann said her daughter did not drink excessively or take drugs.

The 25-year-old artist was given fluids but her condition worsened and she struggled to breathe, The Sun reports.

She died after deteriorating during a spinal tap, which doctors hoped could pinpoint the problem.

Doctors believe Ms Young suffered a generalised cerebral edema — an accumulation of fluid in the brain, the court heard.

Daughter would be alive with ‘proper care’, mum says

Ms Uhlemann told the inquest her daughter would not have died if she had received “proper care”.

“I believe she lost the chance to live. How can it be that a previously healthy young woman dies in a hospital and yet nobody knows why?” she said.

However, Dr Thomas Samuels, who was involved in the spinal tap, said that he “wouldn’t have done anything differently”. The doctor did agree that communication with Ms Young could have even better.

The inquest hearing continues.
