‘He was in hysterics’: Father’s pain as boy dies in horrific crash

Witnesses have described the distressing moment a father discovered his 12-year-old son was killed in a horrific crash in Sydney’s northwest.

A speeding Commodore became airborne, slamming into cars near the M2 off ramp at Baulkham Hills about 7pm on Saturday, which also left the boy’s little sister and a woman, understood to be their mother, critical in hospital.

“He was in hysterics. He was screaming about his son,” a witness at the scene revealed.

John Pagakis, 34, who was allegedly behind the wheel of a grey Commodore, was later arrested after allegedly fleeing the scene.

The children’s parents were in their Holden Captiva alongside them when it was struck.

While the mother was critically injured along with their five-year-old daughter, their 12-year-old son was killed.

“The little girl in the back was screaming and crying but the mother in the front, she had her eyes rolling in her head,” the witness recalled.

Witnesses have told 7 News the driver of the Commodore ran off after the crash.

“It’s just one of the lowest acts, just to disappear,” witness Bret Simpson said.

Pagakis was arrested 30 kilometres away at his Narraweena home at 3.30am on Sunday.

His mother revealed the whole ordeal has been “a nightmare”.

Police claim the Commodore was speeding on the westbound M2 off ramp, went airborne and crashed into vehicles waiting at the lights.

Witnesses watched on in shock as paramedics worked to save lives in the moments after.

“When there’s a child involved it really hits at the heart of a number of people,” Detective Inspector Katie Orr said.

Mr Pagakis is facing ten charges including aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death, failing to stop and assist and speeding more than 45km/h over the limit.

He hasn’t applied for bail and will face court again on Monday.

“We have footage of the crash so that’s what we’ll allege that speed was a factor,” Detective Inspector Orr said.
