A family have narrowly avoided disaster after a huge tree fell on their family home during a storm north of the Sunshine Coast.

Ella Grieves, 8, was at home with her mother and sister during a particularly heavy storm on Monday afternoon when a tree, about 30m in height, crashed onto the laundry of their Maryborough home.

“I’m very lucky to be alive because I was right there and the tree’s right there, and I could have died,” Ella told 7 News.

Ella said there was a “big bang” as the tree smashed onto the roof, scaring her mother and sister who were left shaking.

“It was very, very scary. I’ve never experienced anything like it before,” she said.

“It was something like in a horror movie.”

From photos taken after the storm, the extensive damage caused is alarming, with fencing crumpled and roof insulation spilling out around the tree.

According to fire emergency authorities, the frame of the house prevented the tree from going through the roof and into the home, sparing the lives of those inside.

Strong winds and heavy rain, including hail, hammered the Wide Bay region on Monday, with the Bureau of Meteorology expecting slight showers and winds of up to 25km/h later on Tuesday.
