Horrific video that will put you off dangerous driving habit

Dash cam footage has shown a truck driver colliding with a broken down vehicle after he was distracted by his mobile phone.

Police in the UK shared vision of the moment driver Cary Gordon will regret forever.

In the video filmed on August 5, 2019, Gordon was driving a heavy goods vehicle along Marcham Interchange, Abingdon, when he began to look down at what police say is his mobile phone. Moments later he collided with a broken down car parked on the side of the road.

The driver of the broken down car, a woman in her 50’s suffered a spinal fracture in her neck, as well as cuts and bruises to her arms, head and one of her legs.

The crash also caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to the roadside barrier and the road was closed for some time.

The investigation found that Gordon was on his phone in the lead up to the collision, video released shows the collision from outside the vehicle and inside the truck driver cabin.

Thames Valley Police said Tuesday (local time), Gordon pled guilty to dangerous driving. He has been sentenced to 14 months imprisonment suspended for two years, ordered to undertake 150 hours unpaid work and has been disqualified from driving for two years.

An investigating officer said the video shows how little control drivers have over their vehicle when distracted.

“This incident highlights the seriousness of driving whilst distracted.

“The dangers it poses to road users and the ability to be in complete control of your vehicle when distracted,” Investigating officer, David Burleigh of the Joint Operations Road Policing Unit at Abingdon said in a statement.

Officer Burleigh said the victim is still recovering and had consented to releasing the video, to educate drivers in hopes of preventing further incidents.

“The victim is lucky to have only sustained the injuries she has but has had to go through months of rehabilitation. The emotional stress and ability to overcome the crash is testament to her strength and character,” he said.

“I would hope that this incident is yet another example to people as to why you should put your devices to one side and focus on driving.”
