Hicks steps down from role with SES

Retired SES Broome Unit manager Laurie Hicks and his replacement Rob Philips with Department of Fire and Emergency Services Kimberley District Superintendent Grant Pipe.

Broome SES unit manager Laurie Hicks has decided to hang up his fluoro jacket and helmet and step down after almost seven years in the post.

Mr Hicks moved to Broome in 2006 after being a member of the Bayswater SES for more than six years.

Two years later, he took over the SES local manager position in Broome.

Mr Hicks has been involved in numerous operational incidents in the Kimberley region, including searches, cyclones and flooding, as well as being deployed to other regions to help with large-scale incidents.

On numerous occasions, he has assisted as a trainer throughout the region and he is qualified in a number of SES specialist skills.

His involvement and interest in vertical rescue over the years has encouraged other members to participate in training courses and assisted in Broome SES' recognition as a specialist vertical rescue response unit.

Mr Hicks was also instrumental in the transformation of the Broome SES building.

Successfully obtaining a Government grant, he donated a huge amount of time and labour into the complete redesign and construction of the building.

The project led to the creation of a more modern, open-plan facility which better suited the operation.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services Kimberley superintendent Grant Pipe recently presented Mr Hicks with a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of his efforts as the local SES manager.

He also received his 15-year Service Clasp for combined services with the SES in Bayswater and Broome.

"We all wish Laurie and his wife Monica all the best for the next chapter in their lives," Supt Pipe said.

Rob Philips has been appointed as the new SES unit manager in Broome.

Mr Philips and wife Carrie-Ann have been active local SES members since 2010 and have been heavily involved in the recruitment, training and development of members.

Mr Philips said he was looking forward to the challenge of the new role.
