Heavy rain, winds in cold front

More than 100mm of rain has been dumped on Donnybrook in the past 24 hours as a strong cold front brought heavy rain to Perth.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Neil Bennett said the first downpour is forecast to hit the city at about 11am and will continue into tonight.

“We’re looking at widespread and persistent rainfall from then on which will be heavy at times,” Mr Bennett said.

Perth suburbs are forecast up to 50mm of rain before tomorrow morning but the Bureau says some of Perth could see heavier falls, thunderstorms or even wind gusts up to 100km/h.

From 9am until 12.30pm, Perth had recorded 6.2mm of rainfall. Rottnest Island, which felt the downpour before the city, recorded 5.4mm.

Jandakot received the most rainfall of the metropolitan region this morning with 26.4mm by 12.30pm.

At Swanbourne, 10mm was recorded.

The State Emergency Services has not received any call outs as a result of the weather so far.

“It’s impossible for us to say where but we could potential see some isolated falls in some areas that could be in excess of 50mm,” Mr Bennett said.

The front may cause flash flooding.

Boyanup has recorded 59mm in the past 24 hours.

A severe weather warning has been issued this morning for people in parts of WA southwest of a line from Lancelin to Northam to Lake Grace to Bremer Bay.

This includes people in, near or between the following towns: Perth Metropolitan area, Mandurah, York, Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River, Bridgetown, Narrogin, Katanning and Albany.

Rainfall from this front is expected to be heavier than normal.

In isolated areas there is also the risk of thunderstorms with damaging winds to 100km/h that could damage homes and property.

Heavy rainfall is being experienced in the Southwest and western South Coastal districts and will extend to southern parts of the Perth Metropolitan area by 8am.

Conditions will begin to ease from the southwest during Friday afternoon.
