GoPro captures terrifying moment skier is buried by avalanche

A camera mounted on a skier’s helmet captured the moment he was buried by an avalanche during a trip to Guardsman Pass in Park City, Utah, on February 16, before he was rescued by two companions.

This video shows the skier moving down a slope before being swept away and covered by snow.

He can be heard calling for help as his companions frantically search for him.

According to US news outlet WFLA, the skier was carried more than 60 metres down the slope as the avalanche hit.

His friends Colby Stevenson and John Brown witnessed the fall and were able to dig him out of the snow.

Although it seems, watching the footage, that the skier was trapped under snow for a long time, his friends managed to get him out in less than two minutes, CNN reported.

“I remember hitting his helmet with my shovel. That’s my head [in the video],” Mr Brown told CNN.

“We dug his head out and I’m like, ‘I’m sorry I hit you in the head’, and he’s like, ‘that was the best feeling in my life.'”

“I had a few minutes to think about, like, am I going to be able to save my friend or is he just going to die,” Mr Stevenson added.

“The end of that day we were just like, wow, life could end that quickly.”

Last week a woman from NSW died while snowboarding after an avalanche struck at the popular Whistler Blackcomb ski resort in Canada.
