Terrifying moment gas cylinders explode into fireball above Melbourne shopping centre
It is believed gas cylinders were responsible for a blast that sparked panic at a Melbourne shopping centre on Thursday, just hours after pedestrians were mowed down by a car in Flinders Street.
Hundreds of people were evacuated after the cylinders exploded in a fireball above the roof of the Bayside Shopping Centre at Frankston at about 7pm.
Nearby residents say their homes and windows shook from the force of the blast.
It is believed the cylinders were nearby at a mechanic’s workshop.
“There were three loud bangs. There were flames. People were running everywhere,” a 3AW caller said on Thursday.
