This gadget helps you make homemade Bloomin’ Onion — but should you?
One of my hottest hot takes is that onion is the best vegetable. One day I hope to eat a red onion raw like an apple, but for now, I just try to get in my daily serving of onion through “normal” means.

Now, if we were to make a Venn diagram of the “perfect” food, one side would be labeled “onion,” and the other side would say “fried.” It would be one circle, and the overlap would say: Bloomin’ Onion.

The co-founder of Outback Steakhouse created the almost 2,000-calorie appetizer famously known as the Bloomin’ Onion. But what if there was a way to serve Bloomin’ Onion at your next party or (even better) a way to eat a Bloomin’ Onion from the comfort of your couch?
Lo and behold, the Great American Steakhouse Onion Machine.
There are a bunch of Bloomin’ Onion machines on Amazon, but TikTok dubbed this one super easy to use and LOVED the final product.
How do you make your own Bloomin’ Onion at home?
According to the manual from the Great American Steakhouse Onion Machine, these are the following instructions:
Peel the onion and slice off a quarter from the top.
Set it on the onion maker frame and press down – but DON’T cut all the way down (the strips of onion all need to stay connected at the bottom).
Put the cut onion in an ice bath for at least an hour — in the meantime, make the batter and onion dry-mix.
After seasoning the onion, fry it in oil on a stovetop.
Dry the onion from the root up and enjoy.
How will I grade the effectiveness of the Great American Steakhouse Onion Machine?
The machine will be graded on two factors:
Price: The machine is $78 on Amazon. The Bloomin’ Onion is less than $8 at Outback.
Convenience: Is it actually worth buying the machine, or should you just go to an Outback Steakhouse?
Is it worth it to make your own Bloomin’ Onion at home?
Aside from the oil fire I almost started in my kitchen, it really isn’t that hard to make your own Bloomin’ Onion with this machine.
However, when it comes to price and convenience, you can’t beat going to Outback Steakhouse. The machine is $78! To make it worth it, you would need to be someone who eats almost 10 Bloomin’ Onions a year. If I just described you, I have several follow-up questions.
