Fired up Fever flick Tactix
West Coast Fever have joined the 2014 ANZ Championships winners’ list with a record-breaking 79-43 victory over the Mainland Tactix at Challenge Stadium today.
Both teams went into the round three clash desperate for a win after losses in the opening rounds of the season.
But it was the Fever who emerged triumphant, recording their biggest ever victory and the biggest margin in the competition so far this season against the hapless Tactix.
Ashleigh Brazill was outstanding in wing defence winning numerous intercepts for her side, while goal keeper Eboni Beckford-Chambers did an brilliant job on star import Mwai Kumwenda.
Goal shooter also returned to form with 57 goals from 63 attempts to claim the most valuable player award.
Bassett and goal attack Nat Medhurst (22 goals) teamed as well as they have this season as the Fever built a huge score.
Coach Norma Plummer waited until the final minutes to make any changes to her starting line-up for the first time this season.
West Coast scored the first goal after Sophia Fenwick missed her first attempt and Bassett made no mistake down the other end.
But the visitors scored the next three goals to have centre Khao Watts worried enough to call an injury time-out.
The Fever then quickly evened the score and started to draw ahead a steamed towards an eight-goal lead at the first change.
The home side were unstoppable in the second term, piling on 24 goals to nine and the Tactix had no answers.
Beckford-Chambers and Brazill continually won the ball back for their side as Bassett reached 30 goals before half time and the Fever took a 23-point advantage into the long break.
The Tactix put up more of a fight in the third quarter after going behind by 27 in the early minutes they managed to score consecutive goals and bring the margin back under 25 before the last change.
West Coast broke the shackles again in the last term as Brazill continued to fire.
Chanel Gomes came on at goal defence, Shae Bolton into centre and Watts moved to wing attack in the finals minutes, but it didn’t halt the scoring as the Fever recorded a huge win.
