Fire tears through entire South Australian towns

Locals in South Australia did all they could to try to battle the flames as bushfires laid siege to towns around the state’s north.

By late evening the fire was burning in a north easterly direction. Hamley Bridge was completely surrounded.

The fire ripped through vehicles and burnt out horse floats have been found littering the streets.

7 News cameraman Jeff Anderson was caught in the think of it.

“The whole town is currently surrounded by fire,” he said.

“There are numerous properties which have been lost in this fire and winds can only be described as cyclonic.

CFS crews are working hard to try and get to the head of the fire but are fighting a losing battle.”

The town of Wasleys had earlier been surrounded.

“Earlier at Wasleys there were houses lost and numerous vehicles have been destroyed,” Mr Anderson said.

Pictures from the heart of the disaster show terrifying flames, exploding gas tanks and burning vehicles.

Farming properties, houses and even a junk yard fell victim to the disaster.

And as hundreds of firefighters, scores of appliances and 17 aircraft did what they could to contain the blazes, locals too pitched in to do their best to battle the inferno.
