Fighter pilot killed after jet crashes in front of shocked crowd at air show
WARNING, DISTRESSING FOOTAGE: A fighter pilot has been killed in front of horrified spectators after his Typhoon jet crashed into the ocean.
The 36-year-old pilot was flying an Italian Air Force F-2000A Typhoon as part of an airshow in Terrancina, about 75 kilometres south of Rome, on Sunday.
Distressing footage shows the aircraft ascending to perform a stunt shortly before plummeting into the ocean.
Thousands had gathered on the beach to watch the show.
The jet slammed into the water just a few hundred metres offshore, sending up a huge plume of smoke and spray upon impact.
The crash reportedly happened after the jet lost power following a stunt, The Mirror reported.
Emergency services located the body of the pilot in the ocean 90 minutes after the accident.
