Epic whale tail emerges in Esperance

The whale tail structure at the Jatek workshop takes shape.

A giant whale tail sculpture that is set to become a dominant feature of the waterfront project was assembled for the first time last week.

Local engineering manufacturer Jatek has completed the initial fitting and is now fabricating the individual elements.

The structure will be taken apart to allow for the installation of glass tiles along the top of the fluke and centre of the tail.

The whale tail is expected to be installed at the end of James Street in May or June.

Esperance artists Cindy Poole and Jason Wooldridge won a tender to design and build the 6.5m high structure last September as one of two major pieces of public art for the waterfront project.
